TAURASI HISTORY AND DISCIPLINARY

The production of Taurasi wine boasts a long history: the wine is in fact produced with Aglianico, an ancient vine originally from Greece, which is why it was called ‘Ellenico’.

It is assumed that Aglianico was introduced in Italy around the 7th century BC. Since 1167 AD. there is evidence of the cultivation by the Spaniards of the ‘Aglianica’ vine in Taurasi, in the Irpinia area

In 1993 Taurasi, on the wave of growing success, became the first Italian wine from central-southern Italy to be able to boast the prestigious DOCG, thanks also to the impulse of the historic Mastroberardino winery, the Antica Hirpinia winery and the studies conducted by the important oenologist Richard Cotarella.

TAURASI: THE TERROIR OF IRPINIA

Taurasi owes its success to its cellars of the Irpinia terroir: endowed with peculiarities of the subsoil and climatic conditions of great enological vocation.

Irpinia is in fact a historical region of the Campanian Apennines, very different from the rest of Campania.

It is in fact a hilly mountain plateau where rivers and streams meander, including the famous Calore, and countless lakes, woods and mountains covered with chestnut, beech and centuries-old oaks follow one another.

The climate of Irpinia is pre-Alpine continental, characterized by strong temperature ranges conferred by the important altitudes, cold and snowy winters and mild summers, with never excessive average temperatures.
The Irpinia soils where Taurasi is born are of volcanic origin, particularly rich in mineral micronutrients. On the surface there are mainly calcareous layers, which emphasize the floral character of Aglianico, while the hills and valleys are made up of deposits of arenaceous and clayey materials, which give great structure and longevity to the wines.

All extremely favorable elements to give life to wines of great concentration, structure, and sapidity, but also finesse and elegance of the perfumes.
