Quintodecimo’s History and Philosophy

“Born to the trade” is an American expression to indicate a son of art, an esteemed professional who, in addition to his skills and talent, has benefited from being born from a family whose traditions, experience and acquired skills have given a basis for starting in life and career. This word, however, seems totally inadequate to describe the results of Luigi Moio , a  renowned producer, researcher, teacher, and consultant who has inspired many producers of the most important houses in the south of Italy and has, by right, become the creator some of the best areas for wines, both for ros and whites . Luigi Moio still teaches Oenology at the University of Naples Federico II.

For over twenty years he has specialized in the sensorial, biochemical and technological aspects  of the aroma of wine, creating over 200 scientific publications from all over the world. He is  a scientific expert for the Ministry of Agricultural Policies,  and has acquired since 2015 the role of President of the Oenology Commission of the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV) based in Paris. 

La storia inizia nella cittadina di Mondragone nel nord della Campania dove Michele Moio, a inizio anni ’50, iniziò a creare vini interessanti in un’area che, nel mondo antico, produceva il Falernum, il vino più grande nel mondo Mediterraneo. Suo figlio, dopo gli studi all’Università di Portici, vicino a Napoli, diventò un ricercatore in Francia e quindi ritornò in Italia per diventare professore di enologia a Napoli. Al tempo stesso, la sua vita professionale includeva una serie di collaborazioni con tenute del sud Italia, molte delle quali, grazie alle sue capacità ed alla sua leadership, diventarono nomi veramente importanti in questa parte dello stivale.

Ma, come molti altri grandi enologi, il desiderio non così segreto di diventare un produttore in proprio fu sempre parte dei suoi piani, e prese forma concreta nella zona più storica e prestigiosa della Campania, Irpinia in provincia di Avellino. Qui, nella cittadina di Mirabella Eclano, insieme con sua moglie Laura Di Marzio, fondò una tenuta che è adesso cresciuta fino ad avere 20 ettari di vigne ed una cantina all’avanguardia.

La tenuta non soltanto è diventata leader assoluto in termini di qualità dei suoi vini, ma anche una sorta di laboratorio dove Moio, per cui la ricerca è sempre stata al centro del suo lavoro e i cui risultati possono essere letti nel suo eccellente libro sugli aromi dei vini, sperimenta una nuova enologia e tecniche viticole. Le sue opere sono disponibili, ad un pubblico veramente riconoscente, nella forma dei suoi Fiano d’Avellino DOCG Exultet, Greco di Tufo DOCG Giallo d’Arles, Irpinia Falanghina DOC Via del Campo ed Irpinia Aglianico DOC Terra d’Eclano. E sopra di tutti nelle sue due superbe versioni di Taurasi Riserva DOCG Vigna Grande Cerzito e Vigna Quintodecimo.

Il professore Luigi Moio, has also recently become famous for the success of his book “The breath of wine” , a popular scientific essay on the sensorial, biochemical and technological aspects of wine aromas, enhanced by the use of anecdotes, examples, similarities and assisted from  the  illustrations of the artist  Ada Natale. One more reason to explore the wines of Quintodecimo, the result of a unique passion of its kind, declined with great awareness and study.
