Piandaccoli

(LASTRA A SIGNA – FIRENZE) Giampaolo Bruni has made the mission and research of the autochthonous Tuscan grape varieties his mission. In Piandaccoli the ancient grapes of the Renaissance are cultivated such as Barsaglia Nera, Mammolo, Pugnitello, Foglia Tonda and of course Sangiovese, the queen grape of Tuscany.

Piandaccoli’s History and Terroir

According to 17th-century philosopher Giambattista Vico, human history does not consist of steady progress from lower to higher forms of civilization, but rather in a series of cycles and appeals. A concept that can be easily applied to the recent history of Italian wine. After a phase, approximately from 1985 to 2005, of “internationalization”, in the sense of an almost obsessive use of new French oak barrels and abundant presence of French grapes in wines, the last twelve years have seen an important countertendency. The key word is now ” autochthonous “: the rediscovery and revaluation of native vines , in the name of safeguarding the bio-diversity of our lands.

One person, who has worked with commitment and passion for the preservation of the native Tuscan vines, is Giampaolo Bruni , who in his Piandaccoli estate , not far from Florence, has dedicated 10 hectares of vineyards to rare, almost lost crop varieties. Piandaccoli is the toponym of a hill just outside the ancient village of Malmantile : historic military outpost on the connecting road between Florence and Pisa. This hill, at the gates of the Tuscan capital, is characterized by a terroir with a formidable minerality and a unique microclimate.

The Philosophy of the Wines of Piandaccoli

However, what makes Piandaccoli wines special is the deep commitment and respect reserved for cultivation and vinification, carried out with skill and great professional competence by the wine consultant Attilio Pagli . In Piandaccoli there are several varieties of Sangiovese, the queen grape of Tuscany, but also the ancient grapes of the Renaissance such as Barsaglia Nera , which gives mineral character to the wines, Mammolo with its fragrant notes of violet and iris, Pugnitello with its small bunches, as big as a fist, which give structure and intensity, the Round Leaf , rich in taste and complexity of the aroma and, finally, the Colorino. The wines produced are varied and all of considerable interest, in particular the production of the autochthonous vines in purity is characterized by character, elegance, balance and freshness. In general, Piandaccoli wines can represent a sort of new beginning and new direction to follow for Tuscan wine. They are wines that have something to tell and an illustrious story on which to base themselves.
