Longariva’s History and Philosophy

The Trentino region of north-central Italy, Alpine and on the way towards the border with Austria, is best known, in terms of its viticulture, in addition to its Chardonnay-based sparkling wines, for light and refreshing white and red still wines. Pleasant, to be sure, but often less noted for their ambition. The expansive training systems with the grapes grown on pergolas with lengthy shoots, the abundance of water from the Adige river, which runs right through the center of the region and supplies the water which is easily available for irrigation, make for highly productive vineyards. And, consequently, for wines which are easy to drink but far less often complex or profound.

One major exception is the Longariva winery of Marco Manica, located in Rovereto, one of the prime areas for a viticulture of higher quality. The site is surrounded by mountains (Baldo, Zugna, Biaena, Stivo, Cornetto) and is far from sources of water; the vineyard are planted on the foothills and the hillsides where the soil is less fertile but the exposure to sunlight and warmth superior, something which is felt in the ripeness which is felt in the grapes. The rest is done by Manica and his oenologist, Loris Cazzanelli, who have put together, over the years, an exemplary line of wines, both white and red, which demonstrate, emphatically, that wines of real character and personality can indeed be made in the region.

The wines of Longariva

Many grapes are cultivated, but this seems to create no problem whatsoever for the team, and the choice is very ample. Somewhat unusually for the Trentino, there is an able and measured use of small oak barrels, and well worth signaling are: the Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio from the Perer vineyard, the Pergole Pinot Bianco, and the Cascari Collina Zinzèle Suavignon. And, unusually in a part of Italy best known for its white wines, an important group of reds: the Lagrein Vallagarina, the Maso Palt Pinot Nero and the Zinzèle Pinot Nero Riserva, the Tovi Merlot, the Marognon Cabernet Sauvignon Riserva, and the Tre Cesure, a lovely blend of the major grapes of Bordeaux. All wines of substance, depth, and complexity which could usefully function as models for many a colleague.
