History and Philosophy of Castello di Volpaia Wines

Castello di Volpaia is a historic wine estate located in Radda in Chianti, in the heart of Chianti Classico, combining tradition, innovation, and family dedication. Founded in 1966 by Raffaello Stianti, initially as a hunting reserve, the estate is now run by the Mascheroni Stianti family. Owner Giovannella Mascheroni Stianti is joined by her children Federica and Nicolò, who continue the family legacy with passion and expertise.
The estate covers approximately 390 hectares, of which 60 are planted with vineyards and 16 with olive groves, with an annual production of around 250,000 bottles. Castello di Volpaia was among the pioneering estates in producing 100% Sangiovese wines within Chianti Classico, anticipating what would later be formally permitted under the appellation’s production regulations and strengthening its reputation as an innovator in Tuscan winemaking.

The winery is housed within a beautifully restored fortified medieval village, where every detail has been preserved, from the stone floors to the towers. Its interiors have been thoughtfully adapted for winemaking while respecting the site’s artistic and historical heritage, with cellars, barrel rooms, terracotta-jar storage areas, and a Vin Santo cellar connected by a network of underground pipes, creating a unique setting for the production of high-quality wines.
Technical management is entrusted to oenologist Riccardo Cotarella, supported by consultant Lorenzo Regoli, who oversees vineyard management and contributes to the estate’s ongoing pursuit of quality. This combination of traditional expertise, oenological innovation, and respect for the terroir has earned Castello di Volpaia international recognition, establishing it as a benchmark for excellence and stylistic precision in Chianti Classico.

Wines of Castello di Volpaia

Castello di Volpaia offers a range of wines that reflects the excellence of Tuscan viticulture, with a strong focus on sustainability and respect for the land. The Chianti Classico Riserva “Coltassala”, made from Sangiovese and a small percentage of Mammolo, stands out for its elegant bouquet and complex structure, while the Chianti Classico Riserva “Il Puro Vigneto Casanova”, produced exclusively from Sangiovese grown in the Casanova vineyard, is the winery’s flagship wine, with pronounced aromas and a round, supple palate. All the wines, as well as the extra virgin olive oil, are certified organic, reflecting the estate’s commitment to sustainable production. Alongside its red wines, the estate produces two high-quality Vermentino wines: Prelius Vermentino from the Tuscan Maremma, fresh and mineral with citrus notes and delicate spice, ideal as an aperitif or paired with fish dishes; and Castelprile Vermentino Superiore, offering aromas of dried apple and lemon, medium body, and vibrant acidity, perfect with light, fresh dishes. Castello di Volpaia’s entire range demonstrates the estate’s ability to combine tradition, terroir, and winemaking quality, making its wines ambassadors for Chianti Classico and Tuscan white wines around the world.
