(COSTIGLIOLE D’ASTI – ASTI) Barbera, Moscato d’Asti and Uvalino from the Cascina Castlet winery are among the most renowned red wines from Piedmont.
Cascina Castlet’s History and Philosophy
La Barbera is the most planted grape in Piedmont, a sign of its adaptability to a very wide variety of different soils and micro-climates and a wealth of styles and characteristics of the wines themselves, which, in fact, can range from very nice offers for the tasty dishes of the bistros of the region up to full and complex bottles that find pride of place in the tables of many renowned restaurants.
Needless to say, in all these hectares there are places where grapes give superior results, and in Piedmont , traditionally, this area is located in a strip of land that begins in the town of Costigliole d’Asti and is extends to Nizza Monferrato and Mombaruzzo. Costigliole experienced an explosion of energy in the 90s with the emergence of a series of small little-known cellars that began to produce wine of great importance. Not all of these newcomers have been able to maintain the initial enthusiasm and determination, but one that has certainly succeeded is the Cascina Castlet estate of Maria Borio.
The wines of Cascina Castlet
The owner and her family have undoubtedly benefited from their experience in the retail wine business. Theirs was one of the most well-known and well-stocked wine shops in Turin , and the knowledge of the tastes of the public certainly does not constitute a disadvantage in the management of a wine-producing property. When the wines of Cascina Castlet attracted attention for the first time in the mid-1980s, they were able to demonstrate that the family project and entrepreneurial initiative were well thought out. Thirty years later, the wines still have a place of honor in the debate on the estates of the province of Asti. The line is varied and includes the Gioiosa , a slightly sparkling version of Barbera known as Goj, the more structured Litina , and the powerful Barbera Passum , a passito that brings the important techniques of the past back to life. The Moscato is another specialty of the house, offering both the classic version sparkling Moscato d’Asti , both as a luxurious dessert wine. The creator of innovation, Maria Borio has devoted a lot of time and attention to the rare Uvalino grape , little cultivated previously and now available in an interesting Uceline offer .
