Scagliola

(CALOSSO – ASTI) Monferrato winery that produces excellent examples of Moscato d’Asti white wine and Barbera d’Asti red wine. The best known labels are SanSì, a Barbera d’Asti DOCG Superiore wine and Volo di Farfalle, a Moscato wine.

Scagliola’s History and Philosophy

Calosso, like other areas around the province of Asti, suffers from a somewhat uncertain viticultural identity. Here the classic grapes of the area are grown, often with excellent results certainly, but the city is not connected to Moscato as, for example, Canelli, Santo Stefano Belbo or Castiglione, nor its Barbera d’Asti is highly regarded as that of Nizza Monferrato, Vinchio, Agliano Terme, or Castelnuovo Calcea. Despite this somewhat blurred identity, the winery of Maggiorino and Mario Scagliola is well known for the quality of their wines.

That are not limited to the traditional ones of the area, but they range a lot. Azörd is an interesting and innovative blend of Barbera , Nebbiolo and Cabernet Sauvignon , a structured and often complex wine, while their Dolcetto , Busiord , is both well-made and quite varietal in character, despite the fact that few other producers in the surrounding area cultivate this grapes and offer this wine. A mistake, judging by the results obtained here. The Chardonnay is offered in two versions, the fresh and fragrant Casot Dan Vian and the most ambitious Piedmont Chardonnaybarrel aged, pungent, mature and broad.

The wines of Scagliola

But most of the 35 hectares are planted with the most important local grapes, Moscato and Barbera , and here the house offers a series of well-conceived and executed interpretations. Barbera, in fact, includes three offers: Frem , regular bottling, aged in cask; SanSì , larger in size and barrel aged; and SanSì Antologia , a wine which, in favorable years, competes well with many famous Piedmontese bottles. Moscato is also offered in two different styles: regular bottling, Primobacio , and a wider and richer offer, poetically entitled Volo di Farfalle. A versatile and professionally managed house and a very reliable source of well-made wine with character.
