LAZIO WINES
What are thebest wines of Lazio? In Lazio both native varieties and international varieties are grown, with about 80% of production concentrated on white grape varieties. However, in recent decades, Lazio has been experiencing a period of development of local excellence, as in the case of the heroic viticulture of Biancolella di Ponza.
The most common autochthonous white berried varieties are Malvasia Bianca di CandiaandMalvasia del Laziowhich, together with Trebbiano Giallo, Trebbiano Toscano, Bellone, and other local grapes, give life to the best white wines of Lazio. They dominate the Agro-Pontino area. instead the productions of Moscato di Terracina towards the coast and of Passerina del Frusinate in Ciociaria. The Grechetto is instead bred mainly in the Gradoli area and on the border with Umbria.
The most common native varieties of Lazio with blackberry are the Aleatico di Gradoli in the Viterbo area and the Nero Buono di Cori. Finally, the Cesanese del Piglio(or common Cesanese) and the Cesanese di Affile, are undisputed native varieties of the region from which excellent wines of Lazio are born.
Other widely used varieties in Lazio are Merlot, Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Cabernet Franc and Syrah for red wines; the Chardonnay, the Sauvignon, the Viognier, and the Petit Verdot for white wines.
TERROIR OF LAZIO WINES
Lazio has a vineyard area of approximately 25,500 hectares, lying between the sea, hills, woods, and extinct volcanoes. About 80%of Lazio wines consist of the production of white grape varieties.
The Lazio vineyards therefore extend over a particularly heterogeneous territory, characterized by a Mediterranean climate on the coast and a continental inland climate with strong diurnal and seasonal temperature ranges.
Furthermore, the presence of numerous lakes creates heterogeneous microclimate sand, the volcanic soils, mixed with friable tuff and rich in phosphorus and potassium, guarantee the grapes’ ripening and excellent savouriness. In short, an excellent terroir that adapts both to native varieties and to large international varieties.
Let’s find out together which are the main production areas of Lazio wines, cultivated varieties, and DOC and DOCG denominations of Lazio.
