Malgrà’s History & Terroir

The Malgrà winery has its headquarters in Piedmont in Bazzana in the municipality of Mombaruzzo, in the province of Asti in the Langhe, Roero and Monferrato areas. Monferrato is one of the strongholds of the Piedmontese vine and wine culture, with a specific vocation, that of a quality production and an ancient winemaking tradition, which thanks to nature, different microclimates and the variety of soils, returns the perfect Condition for a valuable viticulture and it is no coincidence that the truly evocative landscape is a Unesco heritage.

The Malgrà winery was founded in the early 70s by the Bonfante and Chiarle families, in 2012 it was taken over by Edoardo Miroglio, also owner of Tenuta Carretta, in Piobesi d’Alba, in the heart of Roero and of the Edoardo Miroglio Winery of Elenovo, In Thrace Bulgaria. But it is the 90s that will give Malgrà the identity of today, when Giorgio Chiarle decided to start a new entrepreneurial wine project, leaving the company with his Bonfante cousins.

Philosophy of Malgrà’s Wines

Malgrà with its philosophy which is based on the main objective of pursuing the preservation of tradition in the cellar and transmitting, to each bottle up to the glass, the balance and harmony of the raw material obtained in the vineyard, but supported by innovative choices on the Technological plan and principles of integrated struggle, gives an example of virtuous behavior that make this company a good point of reference in the Monferratese area.

Malgrà Wines

Today Malgrà has 34 hectares of vineyards located mainly in the municipalities of Nizza Monferrato and Mombaruzzo.

But it is the vineyards that make the real difference and the specificity of the production of this company, there are several company vineyards with which wines of excellent quality and character are produced, such as the Vigna di Gaiana of 5 hectares at about 190 m asl. , located on the right bank of the Belbo stream in Mombaruzzo and entirely planted with Barbera, the Barbera d’Asti Docg Superiore is produced, and where within Gaiana, there is also the Cugnexio vineyard, cultivated with white muscat, which Has always given life to a high quality production testified by the Moscato d’Asti Docg Cugnexio.

While in the Mora di Sassi vineyard, of 3.5 hectares, located in Nizza Monferrato, at about 250 m asl, in the heart of the territory of the Nizza Docg, the Nizza Docg Mora di Sassi is obtained, a slender and elegant wine, with great acidity Of backbone, smooth tannins and excellent gastronomic potential. Of great interest is the Barolo ‘Marvenga’ DOCG, an opulent, fine wine of rare volume and evolutionary potential.
Then follows the Fornace di Cerreto vineyard, located on the outskirts of Nizza Monferrato, at about 160 m asl, always on the right bank of the Belbo stream from which the enveloping and spicy Barbera d’Asti Docg Superiore Fornace di Cerreto is produced. The floral, fresh and aromatic white Gavi DOCG Poggio Basco, on the other hand, is produced from the Poggio Basco vineyard in the municipality of Gavi, a 7-hectare vineyard at about 400m above sea level. But these are just some of the wines that are created in the cellar by the expert hands of the oenologist Maurizio Chiarle, assisted by the advice of the oenologist Donato Lanati, in which the grapes used are the indigenous Piedmontese and where Barbera represents the symbol variety, as well as To Nebbiolo, courteous, Moscato and Brachetto.
