Giovanni Rosso’s History and Philosophy

The Rosso family of Serralunga d’Alba summarizes, in the history of its gradual, but, seen in retrospect, inexorable, it marches towards the current fame and prestige it enjoys, a good part of the history of the Barolo denomination . And, it should be added, one of its best parts: Serralunga d’Alba, which has long enjoyed a special consideration not only among connoisseurs of its great wine, but, more significantly, among the commercial intermediaries of local grapes, which they sought this grape for the major commercial houses of Alba.
And among the producers themselves: many of a certain level in other parts of the DOCG have long desired a piece of vineyards in the town, and the list of names of those who managed to obtain it is not only long, but it is a real collection of the most respected names of all: Pio Cesare, Bruno Giacosa, Angelo Gaja, Luigi Scavino, Elio Altare, Aldo Vaira, just to name a few.

The Rosso, however, have held important positions in Serralunga for generations, and even in this case the list is amazing: Ceretta, Serra, Broglio, Meriame, Lirano, Damiano. Like many of the growers, however, the family preferred to sell its highly prized grape rather than venture into the business of becoming their own producers. At the same time, however, Giovanni Rosso , in the 80s, restructured the vineyards with the aim of obtaining a significant improvement in their quality level, a move that undoubtedly paid off well, when the family finally decided to become a farmer-producer of the own label. In 1995 their first vineyard was selected, Cerretta, made an appearance, and was subsequently followed by Serra, both top level cru.

Davide Rosso , Giovanni’s son, took the last step, aiming for wines that were not only technically impeccable (he, an expert winemaker and young man with an insatiable desire to learn more about his field of study, traveled throughout the world with this goal), but with unmistakable character and personality, undoubtedly the expression of Serralunga d’Alba. He managed to reach this milestone in the new millennium with a series of novelties in wines, available in the most exclusive wine shops in the world. And he is now the owner of the vineyards in what can be called the most famous Barolo cru ever: Vigna Rionda .
