(SERRALUNGA D’ALBA – CUNEO) Wine of great personality is produced by this Piedmontese winery. The owner is Luciano Pira, a talented and revolutionary winemaker. Among the wines of the cellar, Barolo Prapò and Barolo Prapò Riserva are particularly appreciated.
Cascina Schiavenza’s History and Philosophy
Talent is in some way an inexplicable quality, if we knew exactly what it is or, more importantly, how to reproduce it, the result would certainly be to eliminate it from human abilities. That it exists, however, is indisputable, and in a few sectors it is as evident as in the field of wine. In the numerous areas of production of excellent wines, Burgundy and Barolo immediately come to mind as paradigmatic examples, the vineyards do not belong only to one owner. On the other hand, the wines produced from the same (or same) grape varieties are shared, and it is easy to compare, between the grapes of the same vintage and grown in a similar way under the same climatic conditions.
In many cases, the wines are not only completely different, but there could not even be the slightest doubt as to which wine is the best, almost like the difference between night and day. This preamble is intended as an introduction to the work of Luciano Pira di Serralunga d’Alba , a town to which corresponds an apparently infinite list of first-class vineyards including some of the best wines of the denomination and of Italy, the powerful offerings di Barolo , which show the level that this extraordinary grape can reach in the right hands.
The wines of Cascina Schiavenza
And few hands are more suitable than those of Luciano Pira, who emerged in the new millennium as a truly exceptional interpreter of Nebbiolo (and not only: in the line there are also excellent examples of Dolcetto and Barbera ) and his wines, when tasted at the same time as those produced by colleagues from the same grape, from the same places and plots, his wines regularly stand out not only for their exceptional quality, but also for a character and a personality that seems to reveal the quintessence of the Nebbiolo grape.
Powerful but also balanced, widely fruity but soft on the palate, deep, long and sustained, they simply demonstrate why Barolo is regularly indicated as the best wine in the country. The bottles, unfortunately, are not numerous, the vineyards possessions are just 10 hectares, and obviously not all the vineyards are planted in Nebbiolo. But fortunately, the house has its own vineyards in areas with great names such as Broglio , Prapò and Cerretta . And, from these rows, some of the most memorable bottles of the last fifteen years have matured.
