Giovanni Almondo

(MONTA’ – CUNEO) The Giovanni Almondo winery is among the most appreciated for Italian white wines, among which the wine of Piedmont Roero Arneis (Bricco delle Ciligie) cannot be missing.

Giovanni Almondo’s History and Philosophy

Domenico Almondo is widely considered one of the best wine producers in Piedmont in the Roero , the left bank (considering the flow of water) of the Tanaro river, one of the men who gave greater visibility and prestige to the wine. The area now has its own name, two in fact, Roero Arneis for white wine, which in many markets and for many attentive consumers has supplanted Gavi as the main region for whites, and Roero for Nebbiolo- based reds .

A lot of Barbera is also cultivated and the old vineyards supply grapes for wines that can be positively compared with those produced in other parts of the Barbera d’Alba production area On paper, there is no reason why Roero should not be a better known area and its highly valued and sought after wines. Unfortunately for its producers, directly next to Tanaro there is another viticultural area called Barolo, and the greater notoriety of this bulky neighbor had the effect of casting an unwanted shadow on the many excellent quality wines of the left side.

The wines of Giovanni Almondo

If they now receive the attention and consideration they deserve, it is largely due to the perseverance, dedication and commitment shown by small groups of producers such as Almondo who have always believed in their territory and in its wines and have achieved admirable results in their offers. Almondo was well prepared for the role he assumed: graduated in agronomy from the University of Turin, his technical and scientific background was far superior to the previous generation of farmers, hard workers who in some cases were unfortunately lacking the necessary preparation for the qualitative leap that the Roero needed to give itself credibility.

These qualities were evident in his choice of places for the vineyards: Arneis is 380 meters high on sandy soil, while Barbera is grown 350 meters on compact soil. The Nebbiolo rather mature very well at 250 meters above sea level in a vineyard with an exhibition entirely to the south and a calcareous soil, and this is a Roero confirming that still wines and elegant from this grape can be produced in this part of Piedmont.
