Enzo Boglietti’s History and Philosophy

The Young Turks, the group of political and social reformers who took control of the rickety Ottoman Empire in the early 20th century, gave their name to any group of young men who, driven by an implacable sense of dissatisfaction and restlessness, aim to a profound and radical reform of the existing order.

It may seem somewhat paradoxical, but the production area of Barolo , the most well-known, appreciated and widely known wine area of ​​Italy, was hit by a similar movement in the late 80s and early 90s. A large number of younger growers-producers were moved by discontent and partly excited by a justifiable sense of dissatisfaction with viticulture, too generous in its crops, and with oenology, which required long periods of aging in barrels which, in many cases had seen better days.

Their solutions were often very extreme: much more rigorous pruning during the winter and a severe reduction of crops during the summer, drastically reduced fermentation times, often in rotational tanks for fermentation, and, perhaps most important of all in terms of character of the finished wines, a wide use of small French oak barrels for aging.

One of the protagonists of the young rebels was Enzo Boglietti of La Morra who had the undeniable advantage of owning vineyards widely considered among the best in the entire town of La Morra: Brunate , Fossati , Case Nere  and, more recently, Arione di Serralunga.

Like all rebels with a strong respect for himself and his ideas, Boglietti often took things to the extreme, offering super-concentrated wines with very generous doses of new oak and also producing a wine from grapes, Merlot in this case , with no previous history of any kind in Piedmont.

As is natural, with the passage of time and the growth of experience (not to mention a reduced sense of dissatisfaction), Boglietti started to keep a more measured attitude than his wines, still practicing a very rigorous viticulture, but basically relaxing in the basement. The wines still express themselves with a taste between intense and concentrated, but are more nuanced, and the influence of the oak is significantly less. All for the sake of the wines themselves. Nobody had ever questioned that he was a stubborn and capable producer and the excellent offers of Dolcetto and Barbera of the line have always been a convincing proof.
