Arunda’s History and Philosophy

The Arunda Winery is located in Meltina in Trentino-Alto Adige, in the autonomous province of Bolzano between Val Sarentino and Val Passiria, on the Montezoccolo plateau, about 1200 in a wonderful panoramic position above the Val d’Adige.

The vineyards immersed amongst atmospheric mountains, from where it is possible to capture the view of the Monte Risco (2003 m a.s.l.), which is situated at the crossing with the Val Sarentino and also where are the famous “omini di pietra”, hundreds of little men built by stones placed one on top of another. Probably an ancient place of worship. The story of this family run cellar, dates back to the 70s of the 1900s, and as of many years ago it has specialized in creating wines and especially in the production of spumanti with the original Metodo Classico, a process of production which consists in inducing the refermentation of the wines in the bottle by introducing selected sugars and lees.

Indeed Josef Reiterer, the proprietor of the company has been president of the Associazione Spumanti Metodo Classico Altoadige. Every year the cellar Metodo Classico Arunda produces 130.000 bottles of super fine perlage in brilliant tones of yellow and pink. Such a precious production is obtained thanks to this territory which permits the ripening of the most precious wines. In fact the 1200mt altitude of Meltina is suitable for the ripening of spumanti wines. Thanks to the natural temperature variations of this altitude, a natural and serene ripening of the wines is permitted. At least 24 months are necessary to give the Spumanti Arunda that richness, that elegance and that complexity which makes them appreciated at national level.

It is to be underlined  that certain Cuvée remain in the cellar even 60 months before the bottles are as is tradition, disgorged and sent out for selling. The Reiterer family has a scrupolous attention towards traditions and the “messa in punta” is done by hand. Josef Reiterer is carrying on research for the quality development of his effervescent wines produced with the metodo classico, appreciating and using all along modern technologies, teaching his skill to his family members Michael, Marianne and Sepp Reiterer, who with the same dedication invest their present for a future characterized by excellence and continuous innovation.
