(CORATO – BARI) Leader in the denomination Castel del Monte, this company since 1822 directed by the Perrone Capano family produces wines from which Riserva Le More, Il Melograno, Gazza Ladra, Gazzanera. Many wines are based on Nero di Troia.
Santa Lucia’s History and Philosophy
The Puglia is a region that can boast of ancient stories kept, since for many generations has been almost exclusively a source for bulk wine, which was then sent to other parts of Italy, especially in the north, and beyond the Italian borders, which added a touch of alcoholic warmth to other full-bodied wines. It was therefore natural and inevitable that it was rare to find companies that bottled their wine. A significant exception, however, is represented by the Santa Lucia Winery in the town of Corato , leader in the denomination Castel del Monte north of Bari.
The property belonged to the Perrone Capano family of Naples, magistrates of the reigning Bourbon family, as early as the early 17th century. A drawing of the structure of the cellars, still existing, is dated 1822, while a topographical map of the vineyards dates back to 1849. All very unusual for the time and place and proves that the potential of the area was already well recognized. A potential that has turned into a solid production reality in the last twenty years, thanks to the work of Roberto Perrone Capano , residing in Naples but with a strong attachment to the estate and its wines that has become stronger and stronger over the years.
The wines of Santa Lucia
Among the first to firmly believe in Nero di Troia, the main variety of vineyards, and helped by two highly talented and experienced professionals, Paolo Caciorgna for winemaking, and Alfredo Tocchino , his offers have become important examples of how this vine is significant when properly grown, fermented and aged. The wines are available in a number of styles and levels, from the firm but flexible Il Melograno , normally the first to be made, to the stronger Riserva Le More and the intense, rich Riserva 0,618. But the story does not end with this offer of wines. There is the fresh and tasty Gazza Ladrabased Fiano, a well-made rosé, once again, obtained from Nero di Troia grapes and, as an alternative red, Gazzanera , a Negroamaro . Puglia is also known for its dessert wines from the Aleatico grape and this is also part of the line: Gazza Rubina .
