Ômina Romana

(VELLETRI – ROMA) Ômina Romana nel Lazio produces highly successful international wines such as Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Viognier, but also starting from the native Cesanese..

The Story of Ômina Romana

The Ômina Romana Winery is based in Velletri, 40 km from Rome in Lazio. Here your gaze makes space between the rolling hills of volcanic origin of the Castelli Romani that slope down towards the Tyrrhenian Sea.

As is well known, the most beautiful places are often also the most suitable for the production of wines. And it is here, in fact, that the Ômina Romana winery was founded in 2007 by the impulse of the Börner family with the ambition of creating wines of great territorial identity but with a modern outlook.

A great adventure born from Anton F. Börneree’s passion for Italian wine and undertaken with the aim of enhancing the enological potential of the Lazio region to create unique and international wines, with great attention to quality, environmental sustainability and biodiversity.

The terroir of Ômina Romana wines

Ômina Romana today has over 60 hectares of vineyards located halfway 25 km from the sea, of which 60% concern red grape varieties including international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and the traditional Cesanese, while the remaining 40% is intended for white grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Viognier and the native Bellone.

The climate here is sub-Mediterranean favored by the thermoregulatory action of the Tyrrhenian Sea: the cool sea breeze mitigates the heat by caressing the vines in the summer months, while the winds coming from the Alban Hills favor the good nocturnal temperature ranges essential for the olfactory finesse of the wines .

The soils are mainly clayey and sandy of volcanic origin, with variable exposures and altitudes that oscillate around 250 a.s.l.

The pedoclimatic heterogeneity of the Ômina Romana vineyards allows to select and assemble, as per French inspiration, grapes from different plots with different characteristics. This allows us to ensure, with oenological precision, the constancy and organoleptic balance of the wines in the different vintages, also according to the different needs of the vines.

All extremely favorable elements for an excellent ripening of the grapes and for the production of wines with great structure, strength and character, especially for international varieties of French origin such as Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Viognier.

And the vines of French origin are the protagonists of the production of Ômina Romana, which in the hills of Velletri find an ideal habitat, giving life to rich, intense wines with great olfactory expressiveness that especially enhance the savory mineral tones, the deep aromas . On the palate, on the other hand, anamina Romana wines are material: they often reveal great extract and sensational freshness, thanks also to the contribution of volcanic soils.

The Philosophy of Ômina Romana wines

Territoriality is certainly an essential element in the production of Ômina Romana wines but the traditional, as well as has been learned in Lazio, to be effective cannot ignore the dialectic with the present.

It is for this reason that Ômina Romana has undertaken major investments in the best cutting-edge technologies in order to ensure quality wines, consistency and precision but also respect for biodiversity and environmental sustainability.

The yields in the vineyard are very low, with a rigorous manual selection adopted to bring only the best grapes to the cellar: healthy and perfectly ripe. These are essential prerequisites for not having to intervene with invasive corrections during the vinification phase but to let the first quality raw material obtained from the work in the vineyard speak for itself.

An important distinctive feature of Ômina Romana is the choice to carry out long refinements on the fine lees (sur lies) to enrich the wines with aromas and complexity, but also refinements in French oak barriques of different passages and toasts to embellish the polyphenolic set of the wines, Making them soft, enveloping and extraordinarily elegant.

Ômina Romana Wines

The production of Ômina Romana wines is vast and ranges from the native Cesanese, to wines produced with international red grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, made both as monovarietals, and in blending in interesting Bordeaux blends with Latin names.

Fascinating are the Ômina Romana wines from the Ars Magna selection, the top line that represents the flagship of the production made starting from the most suitable vineyards of the company.

The white wines of Ômina Romana, on the other hand, are made from French vines such as Chardonnay, Viognier and the native Bellone.

Among the vines there is the inevitable Cesanese, a very multifaceted variety counted among the most interesting red grape varieties of Lazio that is acquiring more and more international charm and popularity.

With the Cesanese a very fascinating wine is produced, with exceptional flavor and gastronomic versatility. A truly new and elegant interpretation of the red wine par excellence of Lazio and Rome, embellished in this case by sur lies refinements and the use of second passage barriques.

Among the other red wines, the Bordeaux blend Diana Nemorensis I is also interesting, a deep, rich and captivating wine, with lively and compact tannins and excellent acidity. A sensational wine also when paired with structured dishes of roast meat and game.

A real out of class among the red wines of Ômina Romana is Cabernet Franc Ars Magna, a sumptuous, voluminous and unusually elegant wine, which conquers the nose with a broad and complex bouquet that ranges between clear notes of small red fruits , balsamic suggestions, aromatic herbs and delicate woody notes well integrated. One of the best Cabernet Francs in Italy.

Among the whites of Ômina Romana of great interest is Chardonnay Ars Magna, a wine of great olfactory eloquence that outlines notes of broom, Mediterranean scrub and exotic yellow-fleshed fruit embellished with tones of salt and hydrocarbons.

Also extraordinary is Viognier, the elegant white grape variety from the Rhone Valley ennobled by the Mediterranean climate of Lazio, volcanic soils and the use of barriques, gives life to a wine with a great character that combines great olfactory finesse, flavor and strength.

But the Ômina Romana wine line is all about discovering and once again testifies to the great expressive potential of the Lazio terroir
