Cantine Antonio Caggiano

(TAURASI – AVELLINO) Caggiano is a winery particularly renowned for the production of Aglianico, Fiano and Greco. Among all, the Macchia dei Goti offer stands out among the regions of southern Italy.

Cantine Antonio Caggiano’s History and Philosophy

The verdict on Aglianico , the grape from which austere, majestic and powerful red wines are produced in the central part of southern Italy, Campania and Basilicata, could not have been clearer or less ambiguous: an exceptional grape, together with the great ones of Italy, Nebbiolo and Sangiovese. The true homeland of great Aglianico, however, is the province of Avellino , in the denomination Taurasi for precision, where the cool climate and the long growing season allows the creation of wines of a majestic power, with an intensity, concentration and longevity which make them, when done correctly, some of the largest in the world.

Until recently, Taurasi, like other parts of Italy, has been dominated by large companies that have purchased the grapes of the many small owners who cultivated the grapes, but this has also changed, and the trend by small and medium-sized companies is now bottling their wines. This is the case of Antonio Caggiano who, after traveling the world to satisfy his passion for photography (the walls of his offices and tasting room are covered with photos of that period of his life), he started working with a old vineyard that belonged to his family.

The wines of Cantine Antonio Caggiano

Collecting success after success, the company now includes 30 hectares and, above all, the extraordinary quality of the wines has allowed it to win a place of honor in quality markets all over the world. The house cultivates all the main varieties of its province, Aglianico to be sure, but also Fiano, Greco and, more recently Falanghina , also, thanks also to the thick advice of the oenologist Luigi Moio , there is no minor card in the deck. Fiagre is an innovative blend of Fiano and Greco, Bechar and Devon , excellent examples respectively of Fiano and Greco. But it is Taurasi that made everything possible, and the Macchia dei Goti offer is certainly one of the most impressive wines of southern Italy.
