(GHEMME – NOVARA) The Arlunno family, which owns and manages these cellars, boasts in its production several Nebbiolo-based excellences: Anno Primo, Collis Carellae , Collis Breclemae, Lord of Bayard and also offers fresher and fruity wines such as Carolus, Il Mimo, Primigenia, Villa Horta and Agamium.
Antichi Vigneti di Cantalupo’s History and Philosophy
The Arlunno family has lived in Ghemme, Upper Piedmont, since the end of the 15th century and has handed down its farms from generation to generation, together with respect for the land and a strong partnership with wine.
When in 1969 the Ghemme became DOC, the family replanted the old vineyards, expanded the vineyard extension and built a new cellar. A risky move for those years, when Nebbiolo’s demand , excluding a few areas, was not strong at all. Yet Alberto Arlunno , at the helm of the company since 1981, has always had an unshakeable faith in his native territory, which in the past had enjoyed vast and well-deserved fame. From Pliny the Elder to Stendhal, from Antonio Fogazzaro to Mario Soldati, many praised the Agamine lands and its products.
The mineralogical complexity of the Ghemme terroir is today considered extraordinary: African, European, oceanic components, deep terrestrial crust and rocks of the Supervulcano of Valsesia. An area that is part of the Global Geopark Sesia Val Grande, registered in the UNESCO lists as a site of universal value, exceptional for its scientific aspect.
The wines of Antichi Vigneti di Cantalupo
The resulting wines have their own distinctive personality, more full-bodied than that of Gattinara’s neighbors, perhaps slightly more tannic and slow to evolve, but broad and solid when matured well.
