Andrea Oberto

(LA MORRA – CUNEO)  In Alba, Piedmont, Andrea Oberto produces wines based on Nebbiolo grapes with a strong focus on Barolo red wine, but also Dolcetto d’Alba wines. 

Andrea Obertos History and Philosophy

Oberto is a Piedmontese common name, and there is no shortage of wine producers with this surname, especially in the area around the city of Alba . One that stands out particularly is Andrea in the town of La Morra, where his excellent possessions of vineyards have given him, for the past 30 years, the grapes for his wines that know how to compete very well with some of the best bottles of both his town and of that denomination.

The story can be said to have started in 1988, in a sense a turning point for Piedmont and Barolo . The excellent vintage of 1985 had created a new interest in the area, and what was needed was the climate for another important year essential to stimulate the ambition, concentration and constant commitment of producers, especially young and impatient ones to make a name for itself and to experiment with new concepts of fermentation and aging of wines.

There was also an increase in the awareness that the quality had to start in the vineyard with lower yields and harvests calculated later to obtain the best maturity of the grapes, richer and sweeter, elegant and at the same time powerful. One of the most memorable vintages for the wines, in fact, was the selection Barbera di Oberto , Giada , a wine so powerful that it could compete with many Barolo wines . A Dolcetto of a new quality, no longer a simple wine to sip but a very fruity, pleasant to drink young, and also large and long, easily appreciated 3-4 years after the harvest.

Barolo, needless to say, continued to be the center of Oberto’s attention, something easy to understand even with a quick glance at his possessions of vineyards planted in Nebbiolo: Albarella, a lesser known cru but, in his hands, a source of an absolutely excellent wine and Rocche dell’Annunziata, the vineyard which, together with Cerequio and Brunate, is the maximum in terms of potential in the entire town. The style of the house, once decidedly modern and international with an important presence of new oak, has changed in recent years with a more measured use of the new oak. And the wines, modern classics of the superior Nebbiolo, have only benefited from the new balance.
