Le Macchiole’s History and Philosophy
\n<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

The history of\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Bolgheri<\/span><\/span><\/strong> \u00a0is curious, both as regards its origins and for its current status as source of some of the most awarded wines in Italy. <\/span>Like much of the Tyrrhenian coast of\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Tuscany<\/span><\/span><\/strong> , the <\/span>Bolgheri<\/span><\/strong> area too\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0it was not a wine growing area at all. <\/span>The cause was due to the presence of stagnant water which favored the proliferation of mosquitoes and therefore of malaria. <\/span>Furthermore, the area was not densely populated, especially near the sea, and the amount of agricultural activities was very small. <\/span>The first wine, which represented a real innovative effort, was Sassicaia, made by the Marquis Mario Incisa della Rocchetta. <\/span>A few thousand bottles that appeared in the 70s, but that did not produce any particular effect, inspiring only a few companies to follow in his footsteps.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

One of these was the <\/span><\/span>Azienda Agricola Le Macchiole owned<\/span><\/span><\/strong> \u00a0by\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Eugenio Campolmi<\/span><\/span><\/strong> , a citizen of the place whose family worked in the restaurant sector. <\/span>Eugene was convinced immediately that the climate and the local soil could produce excellent wines from\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Cabernet Franc<\/span><\/span><\/strong> \u00a0and\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Merlot<\/span><\/span><\/strong> \u00a0from\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Bordeaux<\/span><\/span><\/strong>. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The wines of Le Macchiole<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Its red wines, both the\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>blend<\/span><\/span><\/strong> \u00a0and a series of mono-varietal wines based on\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Merlot<\/span><\/span><\/strong> ,\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Cabernet Franc<\/span><\/span><\/strong> \u00a0and\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Syrah<\/span><\/span><\/strong> , led\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Le Macchiole<\/span><\/span><\/strong> \u00a0to become one of the prominent names both along the coast and throughout\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Tuscany<\/span><\/span><\/strong> .<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

On a cruel whim of fate Eugene did not live long enough to see all the glory that his foresight should have rightly recognized him. <\/span>But his wife,\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Cinzia Merli<\/span><\/span><\/strong> , continued her activity with the same determination and will. <\/span>Today\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Messorio<\/span><\/span><\/strong> \u00a0( <\/span><\/span>Merlot<\/span><\/span><\/strong> ) and\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Scrio<\/span><\/span><\/strong> ( <\/span><\/span>Syrah<\/span><\/span><\/strong> ) are now regularly listed among the best wines in the region. <\/span>But even more successful was the\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Paleo Rosso<\/span><\/span><\/strong> , since 2001 entirely\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Cabernet Franc<\/span><\/span><\/strong> , a wine to be discovered and a real surprise given that, in\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Bordeaux<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, the grape normally gives wines with an intense fragrance and personality, but little bodied. <\/span>On the Tuscan coast, however,\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Cabernet Franc<\/span><\/span><\/strong> \u00a0can obtain superlative results and\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Paleo<\/span><\/span><\/strong> \u00a0has shown it, inspiring many followers, who have given new prestige to\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Tuscany<\/span><\/span><\/strong> \u00a0and its wines.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
